Kurt watched out the window of his apartment for Molly and the children to return. Virginia would be there, too, but he didn’t mind seeing her as long as she didn’t see him. Curiosity had nearly driven him crazy while he waited. He couldn’t imagine how his former mother-in-law could be on friendly terms with Molly after the scene he had witnessed between Bev and Molly earlier in the afternoon. He could hardly wait to talk with Molly.

When Eric and Emily finally came into view, Kurt stood to the side of the window. He observed them through the partially open blinds. His children chased each other around the car while Molly and Virginia talked. Finally, Virginia turned to the children. She said something, and they got into the car. Molly and Virginia shook hands. Then Virginia slipped behind the wheel of her vehicle and drove away.

Molly stood in the yard until the car reached the main road. After the car turned onto the road, she dashed toward the carriage house. Kurt didn’t wait for her to come to him. He raced to the door and down the stairs. He met her on the bottom step.

As Kurt’s gaze roamed Molly’s face, he realized that his heart was racing. Emotions overwhelmed him. Love for his children. Hatred for Virginia Spencer. And an undefined feeling for Molly that scared him. He didn’t want to explore it further. Fear made him shove it aside. He needed to think of one thing and one thing only.

His children.

“Molly—”

“Kurt—”

They both spoke at once, then stopped.

“You go first.” Kurt’s heart raced.

Molly put a hand to the side of her head. “I’m not sure where to begin. You’re probably wondering what happened.”

“That’s an understatement.”

“Let’s go up to the house, and we can talk.” Molly headed across the yard.

Kurt fell into step beside her. He wanted to know about his kids. Jealousy ate at him because Molly had been so close to them and had talked with them. But he couldn’t express those feelings. “What are my kids like?”

Molly looked over at him. Her eyes conveyed a sympathy he hadn’t expected. “They are precious. They’re well-behaved and polite. You would be proud of them.”

“And I suppose I have Virginia Spencer to thank for that.” He couldn’t keep the bitterness out of his voice.

“Yes, I think you do. I know you don’t want to hear that, but it’s true. She’s raised your children.”

“Only because she helped send me to prison.” Kurt kicked at the dusty ground as he walked ahead of Molly. He didn’t want to hear anything good about his former mother-in-law.

“Listen to me, Kurt.” Molly caught up to him and touched his arm.

Her touch made him stop mid-step while his heart pounded. He gazed at her. A lump rose in his throat, and he couldn’t talk for a moment. Lucky for him and her. Otherwise he would have yelled at her.

Swallowing the lump, he took a deep breath. Calm settled over him, but it didn’t take away the bitterness. “Don’t lecture me.
